Windows 11 26H2: What Is New, Release Date, and How to Install It

Windows 11 version 26H2 is Microsoft’s annual feature update for 2026. It reached the Release Preview Channel on August 27, 2026 as build 26300, ISOs followed on August 31, and general availability is due later this year, most likely in October, which is when the last three annual updates arrived. It installs as a small enablement package rather than a full upgrade, and its main job is to reset your PC’s support clock for another two years.

This guide explains what 26H2 changes, why it matters even though most of its features are already on your PC, how it relates to the separate 26H1 release on new Snapdragon laptops, and how to install it now or when it ships. What Windows 11 26H2 Is

Since 24H2, Microsoft has kept every Windows 11 release on one shared servicing branch. Versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share the same source code, the same monthly security and quality updates and the same compatibility testing; the only difference between them is which features are switched on. New features ship quietly inside the monthly cumulative updates in a disabled state, and once a year an enablement package flips them on and stamps a new version number on the PC.

That is why 26H2 will feel anticlimactic. Microsoft’s Insider announcement says many of its features “might already be familiar” because they arrived through monthly updates over the past year. PCWorld reports the enablement package itself is about 174 KB, which is the size of a small image, and installation takes one restart. Your version number changes; your day-to-day experience mostly does not.

What Is New in Windows 11 26H2

Microsoft has published a short list rather than a long one. Its named items for 26H2 are:

• Windows settings backup turned on by default. Your settings, your list of Microsoft Store apps and some personal files back up to your Microsoft account automatically, which is also what makes a new PC restore itself. It can be switched off in Settings.
• App-specific actions from the taskbar, so right-clicking a pinned app exposes tasks that app registers, similar to jump lists.
• A set of File Explorer improvements that had been held back on managed business PCs and are now enabled for everyone.
• Everything that reached 24H2 and 25H2 through 2026’s monthly updates, including the recovery features Microsoft calls Point-in-Time Restore and Cloud Rebuild, becomes part of the 26H2 baseline.

Microsoft frames the first three as features that were already available to consumers but not enabled by default on commercial devices, so if your PC is a home machine that has taken every monthly update, you may find you have had most of this since spring. Why 26H2 Matters: Your Support Clock

The real reason to install 26H2 is the lifecycle reset. Each annual version of Windows 11 is supported for 24 months on Home, Pro, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations, and for 36 months on Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise. When the clock runs out, that version stops receiving security updates even though the PC is perfectly capable of running the next one.

Those deadlines are close. Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reach end of updates on October 13, 2026, days after 26H2 is expected to ship. 25H2 runs until October 12, 2027. A PC that moves to 26H2 in October 2026 stays supported until October 2028. Enterprise and Education editions get an extra year at each step, so 24H2 Enterprise lasts until October 12, 2027.

Windows 10 shows what the far end looks like. Its support ended on October 14, 2025, and the machines left behind are now on paid or settings-sync Extended Security Updates until October 12, 2027. Windows 11 avoids that cliff only if you keep taking the annual update.

26H1 vs 26H2: Two Different Releases

For the first time, Windows 11 has two versions with the same year in the name that are not the same product. Windows 11 version 26H1, released on February 10, 2026, is what Microsoft’s release information page describes as scoped to new devices that came to market in early 2026. It is built on a newer Windows core, build 28000, and Microsoft does not offer it as an in-place update to existing 24H2 or 25H2 PCs. In practice it shipped preinstalled on the first laptops with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 chips.

Microsoft’s IT Pro blog adds the other half of the rule: devices running 26H1 cannot update to 26H2 either, because the two sit on different cores. Those PCs will move to a future Windows release instead, and 26H1 itself is supported until March 14, 2028 on Home and Pro. If you bought a Snapdragon X2 laptop this year, 26H2 is not for you, and that is by design rather than a fault.

How to Get Windows 11 26H2

When it is released

Open Settings, then Windows Update, and check for updates. Once Microsoft starts the rollout, PCs on 24H2 or 25H2 see an optional “Windows 11, version 26H2 is available” entry with a Download and install button. Microsoft calls this the seeker experience: the update is offered, not forced, until later in the rollout. Because the package is tiny, the download and the single restart take a few minutes.

Right now, through the Insider Program

You can install 26H2 today by joining the Windows Insider Program and choosing the Release Preview Channel, which is the closest to final quality. Go to Settings, Windows Update, then Windows Insider Program, sign in with a Microsoft account, pick Release Preview, restart, and the 26H2 offer appears in Windows Update. Your PC must already meet the Windows 11 hardware requirements, including TPM 2.0. Microsoft also posts 26H2 ISO files on its Windows Insider Preview ISO download page for clean installs.

On a work PC

Managed devices receive 26H2 through the usual channels: Windows Autopatch, Microsoft Intune and Windows Server Update Services. Microsoft’s guidance is to treat it like a monthly update, pilot it on a small ring first, and stay current on monthly patches beforehand so the enablement package has everything it needs already in place.

Should You Wait?

Not for long. Look at the 24H2 deadline: if your PC still reports version 24H2 in Settings under System and About, it loses updates on October 13, 2026, and 26H2 is the update that fixes that. Because the package only enables code that has already been through months of monthly updates and Release Preview testing, it carries less risk than the full 24H2 upgrade did in 2024.
