Setapp vs. Traditional App Purchases: Which Offers Better Value?

The way we use and purchase software has changed, and you have many options to choose from when you want to get some great apps for your Mac. For starters, you don’t always have to pay hundreds of dollars to individual developers whenever you need an app.

Setapp is one of the most hyped subscriptions for Mac users out there. It is so much so that you may find it a bit difficult to choose between a Setapp subscription and traditional app purchases. However, how do you figure out which one of these options is the best for you?

We have already told you whether Setapp is worth the cost. In this article, we will help you answer a bigger question: which among Setapp and traditional app purchases offers better value?

Understanding Setapp

You can think of Setapp as Netflix, but for applications.

For example, you don’t pay for individual movies or TV series on Netflix, and you don’t have to pay for individual apps on Setapp. Instead, you pay a monthly subscription fee, which gives you access to the entire app collection. Like Netflix, Setapp also keeps modifying its collection of apps. You get on-time updates as long as you have an active Setapp subscription.

Setapp app

At the time of writing, Setapp gives you access to 250+ apps made for Mac, iOS, and the web. Some apps like ClearVPN are built with a subscription model. Anyway, you pay an amount as low as $8.99 per month and access all these apps and services via Setapp. You can also explore advanced plans that give you access to multiple devices, including iOS devices.

The company also offers a 7-day free trial, during which you can access all apps from the Setapp collection. We must also add that Setapp has a dynamic collection of apps. You can check out our Setapp Review if you want to know more.

Traditional App Purchases

You are probably familiar with how traditional app purchases work.

Let’s say that you want to purchase an app. First, you need to open the developer’s official website or the App Store page. Then, you need to buy the app by paying a one-time or subscription fee. You’d need to do all these again and again every time you need an app. Depending on the app developer and website, you may need different payment methods as well.

Traditional App Purchases

With the subscription plan, you may get updates for life. However, with one-time purchases, you are stuck with the app’s version that you paid for. So, when you need a newer version of the app, you need to make another purchase. Depending on what you do and why you need the apps, the costs for traditional app purchases can skyrocket at times.

The availability of a free trial depends on the developer and other factors. The practices of an app store like the App Store may also change things.

Now that you know the basics about Setapp and traditional app purchases, we will compare some important aspects like cost analysis and software access.

Cost Analysis

The amount you end up paying is the biggest concern most people have while choosing between Setapp and traditional app purchases.

Setapp

With Setapp, your cost calculations are simple. Given that you go for the cheapest plan, which supports one Mac, you have to pay $8.99 per month, which will set you back at less than $100 per year. The rest is simple: when you pay this amount, you will have access to 250+ apps from the collection. Nevertheless, whether the deal makes sense to you depends on the apps you want to use.

In our experience, Setapp offers incredible value. However, we say this because we use over 100 apps from the Setapp collection. Even if you use 20, the $100 you pay every year will be well worth what you get. But things are different if you use only a few (say 5) apps from the collection. In that case, you might be able to get the same apps through one-time purchases by spending less than $100.

Traditional App Purchases

A cost analysis of traditional app purchases will depend on multiple factors, starting with the number of apps you need and how much they cost. Let’s say that you want to get the five most popular apps from the entire Setapp collection. Let’s take the case of Ulysses, CleanMyMac, CleanShot X, BusyCalendar, and Bartender.

App
One-Time Purchase
Subscription
Ulysses
N/A
$40/year or $5.99/month
CleanMyMac X
Starting at $39.95
$3.95/month (1 Mac)
$5.95/month (2 Macs)
$12.95/month (5 Macs)
CleanShot X
$29 (with Cloud Basic)
$10/month (with Cloud Pro)
BusyCal
$49.99
N/A
Bartender
$19 (v5)
N/A

The total amount for these apps would be close to $208 + $49.99 + $19 = $277. For Bartender and BusyCal, it becomes necessary to upgrade whenever the next version is out. On the other hand, a Setapp subscription should give you access to the latest versions whenever they are out.

Things are interesting when we consider an app like CleanMyMac. Let’s say that you need to use the app on more than one Mac. In that case, it makes sense to get the Setapp subscription, which costs less than the CleanMyMac monthly subscription for a 5-device plan.

To wrap up, Setapp is the most cost-effective option if you like to use more than 20 apps from the collection. On the other hand, if you need only one or two apps from the Setapp collection (very unlikely), you may be better off with traditional app purchases.

Updates and Maintenance

When you use apps for professional needs, updates and maintenance also matter.

With a Setapp subscription, you don’t have to worry about updates or maintenance. As long as you have an active subscription and the application is part of the Setapp subscription program, you will receive all major and minor updates from the developer. It means you don’t have to worry about missing out on upgrades as long as you pay close to $100 per year. Because Setapp is your intermediary for all these apps and services, it will take care of updates and bug fixes as well. In many ways, Setapp replaces the built-in Mac App Store.

Bartender

With traditional app purchases, you don’t get all these benefits. If you want all updates from the developer, you must go for monthly or yearly subscriptions. One-time purchases may offer some updates, but they do not cover major updates. On the bright side, some developers may offer some discounts when you upgrade from a previous version. At the end of the day, however, all these points are dynamic. You can’t expect every developer to follow these practices.

In short, if you are particular about regular updates and minimal maintenance, you will find Setapp to be of better value.

Access to Software

Another aspect of value would be whether you have access to the apps you use.

Setapp does not give you permanent access to the apps. You lose access to these apps when you discontinue the Setapp subscription. While some apps on Setapp allow third-party synchronization, some apps may use the Setapp engine for the same purpose.

On the other hand, traditional app purchases can offer you some level of ownership in the case of one-time purchases. You can retain the ownership of a particular app version even when a newer version is available from the developer. However, we can’t say the same about individual app subscriptions.

Conclusion

In the end, which among Setapp and traditional app purchases offers better value depends on the number of apps you need. So, before you decide, you should check the Setapp app collection.

If you think you need more than 20-30 apps from the Setapp collection, you can get the subscription rather than individual app purchases. Considering the average yearly price of the apps in the Setapp collection, you can pay around $100 and save a lot of money.

However, if you need only 5 or 10 apps from the collection, you may be better off with individual purchases. You should also check if the developer offers a one-time purchase option and a monthly/yearly subscription. Even then, you may not get features like seamless updates or minimal maintenance.

Great breakdown of Setapp vs. traditional app purchases! It’s clear that Setapp offers great value for users who need access to a wide range of apps, especially if you’re using more than 20 apps from the collection. It’s a no-brainer if you’re looking to save money in the long run and stay up-to-date with the latest versions. However, for those who only need a few specific apps, individual purchases might be the way to go. Either way, making an informed choice is key!
