Virtual interviews and onboarding are the new norms for businesses now because of the pandemic. It was challenging for employees to suddenly shift to the remote work culture, but it’s even more challenging to adapt to a new remote role.

If you are being virtually onboarded to a new job, here are some tips to fit into the new role:

Know Your Point of Contact

When you are being onboarded into a new job the traditional way, you walk into the office building and walk into the orientation area to meet your point of contact. In virtual onboarding, that’s not possible.

This is why you need to make sure you know who is your point of contact so you can ask them for guidance from day 1. They will be the ones introducing you to your manager and your new team.

Work on Your Soft Skills

Since you cannot be physically present in the same room with your new coworkers, it is important to have good communication skills to build connections with them. Work on your soft skills so you can present yourself in the best light.

Maintain a positive attitude and be open to helping others as it shows you are a team player. Since you are starting your work virtually, you must be prepared to be flexible in your work. All these soft skills are a way of demonstrating that you are adapting to the new role.

Proactively Network With Your New Team

Instead of waiting for your coworkers to interact with you, take the initiative and set up a one-on-one meeting with them. The more you engage with the team members, the quicker you will be able to transition into your new role.

Not only does internal networking make you feel more comfortable, but also allows you to learn more deeply about your team’s work. This gives you greater clarity about your own role within the team. You can use these conversations to gain greater insight into the company’s goals as well.

Dedicate a Working Space

The first few weeks are crucial in building the right reputation in a new virtual job. This is why it is important to have a dedicated workstation so there are no hiccups or interruptions that disturb your work.

Avoid working from your couch and instead set up a small table for your laptop and important files. It lays the groundwork for a distraction-free work zone and psychologically prepares you to give in your best at your new job. 

Take Interest in Learning the Important Skills

For every role you take up, there are certain skills that you need to master. Learning and perfecting these skills will allow you to perform well in your new role and deliver high-quality results. Every business invests in creating an onboarding program to help employees learn the necessary skills in order to adjust to their new roles.

It is important to make the most of this opportunity and actively participate in the training. The more you engage with the learning content, the quicker you will be able to acclimate to your new team.
