Error 404 pages are fairly common for anyone during the typical web browsing session. They pop up on a site whenever a URL is typed in incorrectly or if there’s some missing or deleted page content. While useful, they can be boring to look at, which is something that a number of site owners have realised, using them as a means to be more creative.
Using anything from artwork and memes to simplified error messages containing the brand logo, 404 pages can actually be quite interesting and helpful for visitors to see if handled in the right way. Here are five great examples of these pages and how they don’t have to say the same thing over and over again:
Propeller have brightened up their page with a cartoon character, which is a good idea. You can also consider using good looking character on your 404 page.
Going a little bit further, the B3ta 404 page is in keeping with the site’s sense of humour.
Tinsanity have gone for an apologetic tone, although it’s not the most professional looking!
Going a little retro, Huml have gone for the ‘blue screen of death’ look, which is one for the geeks! Most of the Windows 7 users are familiar with such blue sceen of death.
No expense spared here with Virgin Holidays Cruises 404 page which looks to be an EDGE animation that cleverly allows you to navigate your way off a desert island.
