GymPact is an iPhone app that vigils your gym schedule. It makes you pay (literally!) if you miss your scheduled gym visit and rewards you if you comply with the schedule. What’s more, it even warns you if you plan to leave the gym ahead of your scheduled time. Sounds amazing! You may have used different types of iPhone apps till date but an app that keeps an eye on your fitness schedule is something unique. If you are wondering how this app works then come on and have a quick look at some facts.
How it Started
According to findings of behavioral economics, a person is more likely to concentrate and give importance to an assignment when there is a cash incentive. The app, designed by two Harvard graduates, Yifan Zhang and Geoff Oberhofer, is based on this finding. The idea struck Mr. Zhang after attending a class on behavioral economics. He started to charge users of the app $5 for each missed visit to gym and pooled the money to reward the users who maintained their gym schedule.
Creating a Profile
As of now, GymPact is only available for iPhone users but soon it is expected to be available for Android and HTML5 users. Start by creating a user profile of GymPact on your iPhone. Decide about the gym schedule that you intend to follow. You should provide details like number of days in a week you plan to visit the gym, time of workout and the penalty that you will pay if you fail to maintain the schedule. Minimum workout time is once a week for 30 minutes and minimum penalty is $5 for a missed visit.
How it Catches
You may be wondering how the app can detect your gym attendance! Don’t forget, with a smartphone in your hand, you can be easily tracked. There are more than 40,000 gyms in the database of GymPact and you can add your gym to the list. Once you have downloaded the app in your iPhone, just hit the check in button when you enter the gym. The app will confirm your location with the help of GPS. An audible pop-up warns you that the workout will be cancelled if you try to leave the gym before 30 minutes of check-in.
Penalty and Reward
If you fail to attend the gym, the credit card company that you have mentioned while creating your profile, will be charged $5 (or more as agreed by you). However, if you are disciplined to fulfill your agreement and maintain your schedule you will be rewarded with cash. The reward comes from your lazy peers who are paying their penalty. The reward is funneled to a PayPal account and you can withdraw your reward once it has reached $10. The company charges 1% of your reward.
A new agreement begins when the clock strikes twelve on Sunday night. You can freeze, cancel or tweak your agreement of next week before this time (for the coming week). If no adjustments are made, the earlier agreement will roll over to next week. If you are serious about following a fitness schedule then this can be a very useful iPhone app.
