Why You Should Use a Gaming Mouse at Work

Avatar of John Hannah John Hannah

If you work a job where you are constantly on a computer, it makes sense to invest in hardware that provides comfort and reliability. A really good keyboard, mouse, and mousepad come to mind when talking about the hardware needed on a day-to-day basis. Although a gaming keyboard and mousepad can help with comfort and productivity, I want to focus on the many ways a gaming mouse can help at work. Keep in mind that a gaming mouse doesn’t have to cost a fortune and many really good budget gaming mice exist on the market right now.

Gaming Mice are Ergonomic

Carpal tunnel has become a real problem in today’s current work environment. There are many things you can do to prevent or heal carpal tunnels such as hand/wrist exercises and massages. A comfortable mouse can go a long way when it comes to preventing carpal tunnel as well. A gaming mouse is designed for long periods of use and due to this comfort is a must for any high-quality gaming mouse. By using a gaming mouse at work, you should be able to improve your overall comfort while working and cut back on any soreness that may arise from daily use.

More Buttons and Automation

A gaming mouse often comes with a number of extra buttons that a normal mouse just won’t have. This is great for gamers, but can also be great at work as well. These extra buttons can be programmed to do common tasks that you perform often. For example, you could use the extra buttons on your mouse for tasks like copy/cut/paste, switching browser tabs, opening up task manager, opening a program like Word or Excel, and so on. The above generic examples are just a few things you could do with the extra buttons. It is likely that you have some task with your particular job that the extra buttons could help with.

To take this a step further, you could record a complicated macro that you could then bind to one of the extra mouse buttons. This is definitely an advanced task, but could be worth the hassle if you had a set of tasks you perform often.

Gaming Mice are Precise and Accurate

When compared to a typical mouse, you are going to get much better precision and accuracy out of a gaming mouse. For many people, this may not be that big of a deal when it comes to what you do a work. However, some jobs may really benefit from this. One such job may be a design job. In particular, I am thinking of a task where drawing with the mouse is required. A more precise and accurate mouse will make this task much easier.

Gaming Mice Are Durable

It may seem that gaming mice are too expensive when compared to typical mice. However, you need to keep in mind that gaming mice are built to last a long time. With this in mind, the extra price shouldn’t worry you too much. Odds are the gaming mouse will last longer than the typical mouse you are comparing it to. Also, as mentioned above, you can find some great budget gaming mice under $30.

With today’s current work environment, a gaming mouse isn’t just for gaming anymore. By using a gaming mouse at work, you can be more productive with the use of the extra buttons. At the same time, you can work for hours on end without issue due to the ergonomic nature of the gaming mouse.

I recently started using a gaming mouse (Logitech G600) at work and asked our IT guy to install the gaming software on my laptop. The buttons for simple macros and commands, and on-the-fly DPI switching are quite helpful. I can’t imagine going back to a 3-button mouse for the moment.

Gaming mice are precise and durable but don’t you think they are a little heavier than the usual ones. If you are a gamer, then you won’t find any issues in using it, but if you are a first time user, then it might take a while to get used to the gaming mouse at work.
    What do you think?

For years I used a gaming mouse when I worked primarily on a PC (writing software in Visual Studio .NET among other tools), and I think it is true that most software developers do benefit from having a higher-quality mouse.

However, nowadays I pretty much exclusively work on a Mac, and use the Apple Magic Mouse. I haven’t seen any other non-Apple mouse that allows the sort of gestures that the Magic mouse does – I’m not sure if the swipe, two-finger, tapping and so forth is something Apple exclusively owns though, or is that something other mice that are more gaming-specific have implemented?
