# Best Android OS for Laptops in 2026: 6 Builds Ranked

FydeOS v23, published on **August 20, 2026**, upgrades the Android subsystem across all editions to Android 13, and that dated release puts it first among the builds checked here. Picking the best Android OS for laptop hardware means asking more than a desktop ranking does: whether the Wi-Fi chip is detected, whether the touchpad and touchscreen behave, whether the lid puts the machine to sleep and wakes it again, and whether the installer can sit beside Windows.

Six builds still have a laptop story worth checking on their own project pages, and only two of them still ship new releases. Bliss OS says public images are paused as of **August 2026**, and its older SourceForge builds are archives with no updates and no official support. Google’s Googlebook, built on the Android technology stack with desktop foundations from ChromeOS, starts at **$899**, and it ships as a finished laptop. Every status below was checked on the projects’ own pages between September 26 and October 3, 2026.

## Key Takeaways

- FydeOS v23, dated **August 20, 2026**, introduces fyDroid and upgrades the Android subsystem to Android 13.
- FydeOS v22, published **January 28, 2026**, tells laptop owners whose machine doesn’t wake after closing the lid to try disabling “Sleep when lid is closed”.
- Waydroid 1.6.3 was published on **May 28, 2026**, and its container image is currently based on Android 13.
- Bliss OS asks you to disable TPM and Secure Boot before installing, and FydeOS asks you to disable Secure Boot and use a USB drive with at least **8GB** of storage.
- Bliss OS public images are paused as of **August 2026**, and older SourceForge builds get no updates.
- Android-x86 lists Power Suspend/resume (S3 mode) and Battery Status as features but keeps better power management on its to-do list, and its 8.1-r6 release is dated **June 23, 2021**.
- Googlebook starts at **$899**, and devices arrive on shelves starting October 4 in the U.S.

## Quick Picks

## 1. FydeOS for PC

FydeOS v23, released on August 20, 2026, upgrades the Android subsystem across all editions to Android 13, and fyDroid now runs by default with no manual setup required. That is the most recent laptop-capable release in this ranking, and FydeOS is the only project here that pairs a dated changelog with a download page matched to your processor.

The FydeOS for PC download page offers an Intel Modern variant that supports Intel Core processors from 6th – 14th Gen, circa 2015+, with Intel HD/UHD or Iris Xe graphics. v23 adds support for AMD GPUs to the Intel Modern variant, so some devices that combine an Intel processor with AMD graphics can use it, although compatibility may vary by GPU model and device configuration.

Sleep is the weak spot. The v22 release notes say that if your laptop doesn’t wake after closing the lid, a potential kernel issue, you can try disabling “Sleep when lid is closed” under the Power settings. The same notes warn that touch functionality might be limited due to the experimental driver state, especially under high system load.

> **Worth noting:** FydeOS’s own v22 notes describe a laptop that doesn’t wake after closing the lid as a potential kernel issue. Until your model wakes cleanly, switch lid sleep off and shut the machine down before packing it, because a laptop that never fully wakes is one you end up rebooting by holding the power button.

Installing FydeOS on a PC means disabling Secure Boot in the BIOS and preparing a USB 3.0 flash drive with at least **8GB** of storage. FydeOS recommends **4GB** of RAM or more for running Android apps, requires a processor with SSE4.2 for the Android subsystem, and needs UEFI support for developer mode and the Google Play Store. FydeOS for PC is free of charge without time limitations, and major version updates cost **£2.49** per update. Before committing the laptop, check that your [must-have Android apps](/top-must-have-android-apps/) are available through the Play Store in developer mode.

- Scored from the FydeOS release notes and Help Center: the **August 2026** release earns the top maintenance score, and the lid-wake warning holds down sleep and battery.

Pros- A release dated August 2026 with Android 13 through fyDroid.
- A documented dual-boot installer that keeps OTA updates.
- Download variants matched to Intel and AMD laptop hardware.

Cons- Some laptops do not wake after the lid closes.
- Secure Boot has to be switched off before installing.
- Major version updates are paid.

### Can you dual boot Android and Windows on a laptop?

Yes, and FydeOS documents the route step by step. Its dual-boot guide needs a 64-bit PC with UEFI boot, a GPT disk with at least **10GB** free space and an existing Windows, macOS or Linux install, and OTA updates are supported in dual-boot mode. Bliss OS can instead install onto the Windows partition without a separate partition.

## 2. Waydroid on a Linux Laptop

Waydroid is a container-based approach to boot a full Android system on a regular GNU/Linux system like Ubuntu, and its image is currently based on Android 13. Version 1.6.3 was published on May 28, 2026. On a laptop that already runs Linux, it adds Android apps without touching the firmware, the bootloader or the Windows partition.

Waydroid uses Linux namespaces to run a full Android system in a container, and the Android inside the container has direct access to needed hardwares. On a laptop, that leaves Wi-Fi, the touchpad, lid sleep and battery reporting with the Linux desktop you already run, so the drivers you already trust keep doing that work.

Waydroid uses Android’s mesa integration for passthrough, which enables support for Intel/AMD GPUs on the PC side, while for Nvidia GPUs (except tegra) and VMs the project recommends software rendering. Check which GPU drives your laptop’s display before installing, since many machines pair Intel graphics with an Nvidia chip. If you are still choosing a distro for the laptop, the [Linux Mint vs Ubuntu comparison](/linux-mint-vs-ubuntu/) covers two popular starting points.

> **Key finding:** On Debian and Ubuntu, Waydroid’s install guide says to make sure a Wayland session is enabled (Ubuntu 22.04+), and Waydroid will not work while running in live mode and must be installed before working properly. Plan on a full Linux install first; a live USB session is not enough.

Switching a Windows laptop to Linux only for Android apps is a large step, so weigh the [differences between Linux and Windows](/difference-windows-linux/) before you wipe anything.

- Scored from the Waydroid documentation and GitHub releases: a **May 2026** release keeps maintenance high, and needing Linux installed first holds down the install score.

Pros- The host Linux keeps handling Wi-Fi, touchpad and power.
- A current LineageOS-based Android 13 image.
- GPU passthrough on Intel and AMD graphics.

Cons- Needs a Wayland session on Debian and Ubuntu.
- Nvidia graphics fall back to software rendering.
- No live-USB trial; it must be installed first.

## 3. Bliss OS 16 (Archived Build)

Bliss OS installs from a bootable USB as an image on your Windows partition, and its docs call this the current recommended method for beginners because it is the least error-prone and non-destructive. The catch: public images are paused as of **August 2026**, and older SourceForge builds are archives with no updates and no official support.

Before installing, Bliss OS asks you to disable TPM (drive encryption) and Secure Boot, and to make sure drive access is set to AHCI. If BitLocker protects the Windows drive, save its recovery key before touching those settings. OTA is not supported for NTFS installs, and when the installer asks for a size, most users choose **8 GB**, **16 GB**, or **32 GB**.

Laptop hardware takes more work here than on FydeOS. Bliss OS’s troubleshooting notes say that for many users, Wi-Fi is not detected right on boot, and that on a newer kernel (5.0+) your device needs native support included in the kernel. The docs show how to disable a laptop’s touchpad temporarily through sysfs, using the KernelSU manager app that is automatically installed in Bliss OS. Fixing touch orientation needs the system mounted as RW and a boot into Debug mode, or root and a terminal.

You can try Bliss OS before installation by live booting it from a USB drive made with Rufus. Use that live session to confirm Wi-Fi and the touchpad work on your model before you write anything to the Windows drive.

> **By the numbers:** SourceForge lists the BlissOS16 folder as modified 2024-02-10, with **9,349** weekly downloads. Thousands of people still download a frozen build every week, so read its Wi-Fi and touchpad pages before installing it on a laptop you depend on for work.

- **Scorecard:** weighted total **4.60**: laptop hardware 5, sleep and battery 3, maintenance 3, install beside Windows 9.
- Scored from the Bliss OS docs, status page and SourceForge folder: the non-destructive Windows-partition install earns the top install score, and paused public images cap maintenance.

Pros- Installs onto the Windows partition without repartitioning.
- A live USB session lets you test the hardware first.
- Troubleshooting pages for Wi-Fi, touchpad and touch rotation.

Cons- Public images are paused, and archives get no updates.
- Wi-Fi is often not detected on boot.
- Touch and touchpad fixes need root or debug mode.

### Is Bliss OS still being updated?

Not as public images. According to its home page, Bliss OS is still under development: public images are paused, the source is not, and a new installer, kernels, and trees are landing. The status page gives no ETA and says existing installs will not OTA or sideload onto the new codebase, so a clean install will be required.

## 4. Android-x86 9.0-r2

Android-x86 9.0-r2, dated 2020/03/25, is the second stable release for Android-x86 9.0 (pie-x86), and it updates to LTS kernel 4.19.110 and fixes an ISO that could not boot in UEFI mode. That UEFI fix matters on any laptop whose firmware boots in UEFI mode, and it is why this Pie build ranks above the Oreo release below.

Besides the ISO, the release ships an rpm package that installs into an existing Linux device with a standalone ext4 root partition and adds boot entries to the grub2 menu. That rpm route, which the 8.1-r6 release below also offers, is the tidier choice on a laptop that already dual boots Linux, because the bootloader you have keeps working.

The Android-x86 home page lists Wifi support with GUI, Power Suspend/resume (S3 mode), Battery Status, Bluetooth and G-sensor among the features of its latest release, and its To-Do List still includes better power management. The G-sensor entry is what a convertible needs for screen rotation, but the page does not say which laptop models were tested.

Pie sits at Android 9 in the [Android version history](/android-versions-with-list-names/), so apps that require a much newer release will refuse to install, and an old security baseline belongs nowhere near banking or work accounts.

Pros- An ISO that boots in UEFI mode.
- An rpm package that adds itself to an existing grub2 menu.
- Suspend, battery status and Bluetooth listed as features.

Cons- The oldest release in this ranking.
- Better power management is still on the to-do list.
- An Android base many current apps no longer target.

## 5. Android-x86 8.1-r6

Android-x86 8.1-r6, dated 2021/06/23, is the sixth stable release for Android-x86 8.1 (oreo-x86) and mainly a security update of 8.1-r5 with some bugfixes. It updates to LTS kernel 4.19.195 and Mesa 19.3.5, and adds more devices specific quirks. It has the newer kernel of the two Android-x86 builds, but its release note never mentions UEFI.

The release note says most modern devices should be able to run the 64-bit ISO, while older devices with legacy BIOS may try the 32-bit ISO. Like the Pie release, 8.1-r6 also comes as an rpm package that installs into an existing Linux device with a standalone ext4 root partition and adds boot entries to the grub2 menu. On a laptop, the 32-bit route only matters for a netbook-era machine; anything newer should take the 64-bit image or the Pie release above.

The Android-x86 home page records the 8.1-r6 release on 2021-06-23 and lists the r-x86 branch as ready for developers on 2022-04-15. No newer stable release appears on the project’s own pages, and the dates below show how far both Android-x86 builds trail the maintained options.

- Scored from the Android-x86 release note and home page: a newer kernel than the Pie build and the same rpm route into grub2, but a release note silent on UEFI holds the install-beside-Windows score down.

Pros- A 32-bit ISO for legacy-BIOS machines.
- A newer kernel than the Pie release (4.19.195 against 4.19.110).
- More device-specific quirks than earlier releases.

Cons- An Oreo base that many current apps no longer target.
- No UEFI notes in the release documentation.
- No newer stable release from the project since.

## 6. Bliss OS for Surface

This version of Bliss OS is designed specifically for Microsoft Surface devices, using almost the same LTS kernel with extra patches from the linux-surface project, and its Bliss-Surface-v14.10.3 image is **2.0 GB**, dated 20241013. It is the one build in this ranking aimed at a single family of 2-in-1s, which is why it ranks last for everyone else.

It also includes iptsd, a userspace touch processing daemon for Microsoft Surface devices using Intel Precise Touch technology, made by the linux-surface team. Bliss OS says not all Surface devices need this build, and points owners to the linux-surface wiki to check whether their device requires the linux-surface kernel.

FydeOS’s v22 notes, by comparison, list Deep Sleep as not supported (except for Surface Go). Outside the Surface Go on FydeOS, neither project documents dependable sleep on Surface hardware, so shut either install down when you put the tablet away.

## Verdict by Use Case

The six builds score between **4.10** and **7.50** out of 10, and the gap between the two maintained options and the four without a recent release is wider than any gap inside either group. Match your laptop to the line below first.

- **Best for a supported Intel or AMD laptop:** FydeOS for PC, the only bare-metal build here still shipping releases.
- **Best for a laptop that already runs Linux:** Waydroid, which leaves Wi-Fi, the touchpad and sleep with the Linux drivers.
- **Best for trying Android without repartitioning:** Bliss OS 16, trading a frozen build for a non-destructive install.
- **Best for a laptop that already dual boots Linux:** Android-x86 9.0-r2, through its grub2 rpm package.
- **Best for an old legacy-BIOS netbook:** Android-x86 8.1-r6 and its legacy-BIOS ISO.
- **Best for a Surface Pro or Surface Laptop:** Bliss OS for Surface, after checking your model on the linux-surface wiki.

If Windows has to stay exactly as it is, an app player is the lighter route, and the guide to [running Android apps on a PC](/how-to-run-android-apps-on-pc/) compares those options.

## How We Ranked

Six builds were scored on four criteria weighted to 100%, led by laptop hardware support at **35%**. Every score comes from the project’s own documentation, release notes, download pages or GitHub releases. Laptop hardware leads because a build that loses Wi-Fi or the touchpad fails the question, and maintenance follows because a frozen image never gets a driver fix.

WEIGHT (%) · Source: TechLila evaluation criteria, October 2026 Ranking Criteria Weights (%) WEIGHT (%) TechLila · 2026 35% LAPTOP HARDWARE Laptop hardware (Wi-Fi,touchpad, touch, rotation) 35% Maintenance recency 30% Sleep and battery 20% Install beside Windows (SecureBoot, dual boot) 15% SOURCE TechLila evaluation criteria, October 2026 View the data| Criterion | Value |

| Install beside Windows (Secure Boot, dual boot) | 15% |

Evidence per criterion. Laptop hardware came from each project’s troubleshooting pages, kernel notes and feature lists. Maintenance came from release-note dates, download-folder dates and the project’s own status page.

Sleep and battery came from release notes and feature lists, and a build whose project says nothing about either scored low. Install came from installation guides: Secure Boot steps, dual-boot support and whether the Windows partition survives.

The checklist below records what each project documents for laptop hardware, and “Not documented” means the project’s own pages are silent.

The split is clean: the two builds with a release this year score far above the four whose newest files are older.

Exclusions. These widely recommended options were evaluated and not ranked:

- **PrimeOS:** the primeos.in site presents PrimeOS 3.0 as Primebook’s Operating System for Laptops, so it is software for Primebook hardware rather than a laptop download.
- **ChromeOS Flex:** ChromeOS Flex supports the deployment of some Android VPN apps, and its minimum is an Intel or AMD x86-64-bit compatible device with **4 GB** of RAM and **16 GB** of internal storage.
- **Phoenix OS, Remix OS and openFyde:** no project-owned page establishing a current release with Android app support could be retrieved during the check.

Evidence completeness. Each build was scored against the criteria above using its project’s release notes, documentation, download pages and GitHub releases. Where a project documents nothing for a criterion, the Quick Picks table says “Not documented” and the score reflects it.

## Does Android on a laptop support sleep and battery status?

Partly: Android-x86 lists Power Suspend/resume (S3 mode) and Battery Status among its features, with better power management still on its To-Do List. FydeOS v22, published on **January 28, 2026**, describes a laptop that doesn’t wake after closing the lid as a potential kernel issue.

Bliss OS documents neither, and Waydroid leaves both to the host Linux, so test a lid close and the battery readout in a live session or right after installing.

## Is there an Android laptop from Google?

Google’s answer is the Googlebook line. Googlebook is built on the Android technology stack and paired with desktop foundations from ChromeOS, starts at **$899** and delivers up to **14 hours** of battery life.

Google says Googlebook OS comes with updates for up to **10 years**, and devices arrive on shelves starting October 4 in the U.S., and October 5 in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia.

Googlebook arrives as a finished laptop, so it answers the shopping question; compare it with the [best laptop brands](/best-laptop-brands/) before buying.

## Conclusion: The Best Android OS for Laptop Owners

FydeOS for PC is the best Android OS for laptop hardware it supports, with v23 published on **August 20, 2026** and the Android subsystem upgraded to Android 13. Waydroid is the better answer on a laptop that already runs Linux, and every other build here is paused or years past its last release, so choose one for the hardware it handles today.

Whichever you pick, switch Secure Boot off only for the build that asks, test Wi-Fi and lid sleep before trusting the install, and keep a Windows recovery drive at hand. Googlebook starts at **$899**, and it is the route for buyers who would rather not install anything.
